High-resolution Marine Gravity Data Acquisition
EDCON offers the new LaCoste & Romberg Air-Sea System II to the commercial market. System improvements include innovations in noise reduction and platform control are designed to make the Air-Sea System II the highest quality marine instrument available since EDCON’s development of the SAGE gravity meter system. SAGE has proven to be the vanguard of high-resolution marine gravity systems designed to take advantage of more precise corrections made possible by GPS. EDCON uses its technology, including SAGE, and the Air-Sea System II to provide the highest quality marine gravity service available both on board seismic vessels and on gravity and magnetic “stand-alone” surveys. EDCON and LaCoste & Romberg will continue to cooperate in bringing the newest system developments to the market.
- News, July 16, 2002 -Marine Gravity and Magnetics - stand-alone or with seismic
Marine gravity data can be acquired on board seismic vessels or a vessel dedicated to the gravity and magnetic survey (stand-alone marine gravity). Marine gravity data have also been acquired on hydrographic and multi-beam bathymetry vessels. EDCON has conducted over 30 stand-alone marine gravity and magnetic surveys and hundreds of gravity surveys on board seismic vessels. In the Gulf of Mexico EDCON has acquired over 115,000 line-km of stand-alone surface-ship gravity data. In 1999, EDCON completed a very successful surface-ship stand-alone marine gravity and magnetic survey offshore Gabon. More recently, a stand-alone survey was completed in Albania and in June of 2002, EDCON completed a stand-alone survey offshore Oman.
EDCON has the ability and experience to provide the highest quality marine gravity and magnetic services to its customers on seismic boats as well as on stand-alone surveys.
Gravity had long been done on roads and trails, but uneven coverage limited the utility of the data. EDCON's pioneering use of inertial navigation and helicopters for gravity surveys both opened up new land areas to practical gravity operations and made the resulting data much more powerful in terms of geologic resolution.

High-quality processing is the key to turning gravity and magnetic data into useful information for geologic decisions. EDCON geophysicists have innovated many of this industry's vital processing steps and thus are both exceptionally experienced and ideally qualified to help solve exploration and production problems. To meet customer needs, EDCON processes data acquired both by its own crews and by others.
EDCON has developed portable processing facilities for work to be completed at remote sites or in clients' offices. This flexibility provides more responsive services while satisfying restrictions on data movement and confidentiality.
- Interactive processing for speed and accuracy in data entry, review, reduction and display.
- Unique processing algorithms and capabilities to handle the high-resolution data from Marine Gravity, Super-G, and BHGM acquisition systems.
- Supervision by experienced geophysicists to ensure the highest possible quality.
- Software engineers on staff to handle unusual formats or special processing requirements.
- Client involvement during processing to assure that all needs are fully met in a timely manner.
- Reprocessing of existing data.
- Integration of land, airborne and marine data into uniformly processed databases. Satellite gravity is used to establish a regional datum and anomaly control.

The true value of gravity and magnetics information lies in its contribution to geologic decisions. To fully optimize the geologic content, EDCON offers interpretation services that integrate G & M with seismic, geologic and borehole data.
Such interpretations allow preplanning of seismic, an independent check on seismic interpretations in difficult areas, an integrated approach to determination of density, verification of basement, information on fault offsets in cases of high-density contrast, and much more.
Gravity and magnetics complement seismic and offer an independent source of information on subsurface geology. When integrated into seismic interpretations, G & M information can reduce the risks of geologic decisions.
EDCON performs confidential interpretations either in its offices or at the facilities of its customers.
